Baxter

Christian Schwartz hired me to develop a casual typeface for use in MyPublisher’s BookMaker™ software. The goal was to make something that had the feel of handwriting without too many idiosyncrasies. After a few rounds of sketches I came up with a style that was a take on the traditional “informal gothic” employed by lettering artists of yore. One of the tricky parts of the design was optimizing it for use in both text and headline sizes. To accomplish that, I gave the stems subtle bends and added ink swells at the terminals. These little details gave the face a distinctly organic feel in text and display sizes. The net result is a typeface that is cute without being saccharine.
